Solar Power – Is There Such A Thing As Free Energy?

If you’re like most people, you look at your electricity bills as they arrive in the mail or (if you’ve gone paperless) your email inbox each month with increasing concern over the rising costs of energy. In many parts of the country, the electricity you use in your home or at work comes from burning fossil fuels like coal. If this is the case where you live, you can expect to see your electricity bill continually growing over time well above and beyond the rate of inflation. Coal and other fossil fuels are a natural resource which is non-renewable for all intents and purposes; these fuels are formed very slowly over hundreds of thousands of years. They also produce pollution which is harmful to your health and to the environment.

Solar panels are one way that you can counter the ever rising cost of electricity; this non-polluting and renewable source of energy relies on nothing more than sunlight to provide electrical power. Depending on where you live and how much space you have available to install solar panels, it may even be possible to almost entirely eliminate your reliance on your local utility’s power grid – though it’s not a bad idea to stay connected to your utility company for a couple of reasons.

It is much more affordable to make the transition to using solar power for your home than it once was. The price of solar panels keeps coming down and there are now lower cost options which include kits that contain all of the parts you need to make saving on your electric bills a DIY project. While there is an initial investment in the solar panels, transformers, batteries and other equipment which you’ll need to make, the vast majority of solar power systems pay for themselves within a few years’ time. Given that the typical life of a solar panel is between twenty and thirty years, you can enjoy truly free, renewable and clean energy for decades thanks to your solar panels.

If you don’t feel up to putting together your solar panels from a kit and installing your own residential solar power system, you could also choose to hire a contractor to install your solar panels and other equipment for you. If you’re not particularly mechanically inclined, then having someone else take care of the job may be a better choice in your case – while it’s somewhat more expensive to have solar panels professionally installed, your solar panels will still help you to save a lot of money over the life of your solar power system.

The sun already provides us with free energy in the form of heat and light and enabling photosynthesis that supports the food chain for the entire planet – but we can also enjoy electrical power from the sun’s rays. It’s something that every one of us can do to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and potentially hazardous nuclear power, reducing the amount of greenhouse gases generated; and the size of those monthly electric bills.
